In the eighth inning, Thurman Munson and Reggie Jackson hit back-to-back home runs to become the eighth pair to accomplish this feat in a World Series game.

Don Sutton's106-pitch performance pushed his career postseason record to 5-0, two World Series wins and three National League Championship Series victories.

The same crisp Dodgers pitching and balanced offense that was on display in Game 5 helped the Dodgers best the defending champion Cincinnati I Reds by 10 full games in the National LeagueR West.

Dodger Stadium was the first privately financed stadium built for a Major League Baseball team since Yankee Stadium (1923).

During the 1977 regular season, the Dodgers blended power (191 team home runs) and aggressive base running (114 stolen bases.)

Opened on April 10,1962, Dodger Stadium cost $23 million to construct and sits on an expanse of 300 acres.

Both cfubs were well stocked with offensive talent. Yet through four games, the Dodgers were hitting a cumulative .190 while the Yankees hit to a .239 team batting average.

Reggie Jackson accumulated the most total bases in a World Series, 25, and tied the record for most in a game (Game 6), 12. He also scored the most runs, 10, and matched the most in a game with 4.

The Yankees and Dodgers have now faced each other in the World Series more often (9) than any other teams: Yankees have won 7 times and Dodgers twice.

The Dodgers and Yankees tied the mark for most home runs in a six-game World Series with 17. The record was set in1953 by none other than the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Yankees.

The Yankees celebrated their 21st World Series championship and first since 1962.

Mike Torrez's nine-inning performance was the fifth time in this Fall Classic ; that a pitcher tossed a complete-game victory.

By swatting five home runs in the Fall Classic, Reggie Jackson set the record for most roundtrippers in a single World Series.

At the conclusion of the New York City "Canyon of Heroes" ticker-tape parade, Mayor Abe Beame proclaimed Wednesday, October 19, "New York Yankee Day."

The Yankees ninth-inning go-ahead run was a sacrifice fly by Willie Randolph off Royals pitcher Mark Littell. The year before, Chris Chambliss hit his ninth-inning pennant-winning home run off of Littell as well.

Thurman Munson's third-inning RBI-single was standard operating procedure for the Yankees captain. In 1977, Munson became the first American League player since Al Rosen in 1954 to have three consecutive years of both a .300 batting average and 100 RBI.

Sparky Lyle earned the victory with 11/3 innings of relief. By the end of the 1977 season, Lyle had appeared in more than 600 games, notched 70 wins, and earned 201 saves-the most by a lefthander in Major League Baseball history at that time.

After Game 4, Kansas City Royals first baseman John Mayberry had a tooth pulled.

In his six full seasons as a manager, Billy Martin's record includes four first and two second place finishes.

Ron Guidry started the game for the New York Yankees on just two days rest and only pitched into the third inning.

The superb Kansas City Royals pitching staff led the American League with a 3.52 ERA, 102 wins and 42 saves. They also allowed the fewest hits, runs, and home runs.

--- Pirates starter Jim Bibby spent 1966-67 in the Army including a tour of duty in Vietnam.

--- Baltimore liberally used pinch-hitters in the World Series. However, in Game 4, pitcher Tim Stoddart was allowed to bat. His hit was his first ever in professional baseball and the first by an American League pitcher in four years.

--- With a Game 4 loss, the Pirates now needed to surmount a 3-1 deficit. In the same position, only four clubs had ever bounced back to win a World Series - including the 1925 Pirates versus the Washington Senators.

--- The Pittsburgh batsmen tallied 17 hits in Game 4, the most by a losing club in a World Series, including three from both Tim Foli and Willie Stargell.

--- Willie "Pop" Stargell's second-inning homer was his second of the 1979 World Series and fourth in seven postseason games that the Pirates had played.

--- Pirates pitcher Bert Blyleven made his first relief appearance in seven years and threw four innings for scoreless baseball to earn the win.

--- Consistent with the routine after recent victories, the three River Stadium sound system played "We Are Family" recorded by Sister Sledge.
