    Baltimore Orioles - Atlanta Braves - 22:1 @ Turner Field (13.06.1999)

with a perfect six-for-six night, Cal Ripken, Jr. became the first player in Orioles history to record six hits in one game and the first to score five runs. Ripken's six hits included two home runs and a double, plus he drove in a six runs. As a final punctuation, his 13 total bases tied the Orioles single-game mark.

The offensive explosion in Turner Field left Ripken 77 hits shy of 3,000 and 9 homers off the 400 home run mark.

In the fifth inning, pitcher Mike Mussina doubled to leftfield. This was the first extra-base hit by a Baltimore pitcher since Roric Harrison's home run on October 3, 1972 - which was also the O's last regular-season game before the Designated Hitter was adopted by the American League in 1973.

The Orioles 21-run margin of victory was the most by Baltimore, topping thethe previous mark of 17 set on July 27, 1969 against the Chicago White Sox, when Frank Robinson hit 2 home runs and had 5 RBI.

    National League - American League - 1:4 @ Safeco Field (10.07.2001)

The entire baseball universe was aware that this Midsummer Classic would be Cal Ripken, Jr. last. After receiving a standing ovation as he approached his first at-bat, Cal Ripken stroked his first pitch for an electrifying home-run. Not only did Cal show his flair for the dramatic, but he hit his second All-Star Game home run 10 years after his first.

In the bottom of six inning, the game was interrupted when Cal Ripken and Tony Gwynn were presented with the Commissioner's Historic Achievement Award. Both had already announced their end of season retirements.

With his selection as the 2001 All-Star Game MVP, Cal became the first Americal League player to win the award twice (1991 as well). Only three other National League players have had double-dip honors: Willie Mays ('63 and '68), Steve Garvey ('74 and '78) and Gary Carter ('81 and '84).

2001 Was Ripken's 19th All-Star Game selection and 18th game played. Cal's first Midsummer Classic was in 1983, the year Carl Yastrzemski and Johnny Benchplayed their last games.

After hitting his dramatic round tripper, the gray-haired 40-year old Ripken became the oldest player to hit an All-Star game home run, topping Stan Musial, who was 39 years old.

When Cal Ripken, Jr. stepped onto a Major League Baseball diamond for the first time he already had the fans' attention. By the end of his first full season, he had proved to be a standout ballplayer and was named Rookie of the Year. American League MVP, All-Star Game MVP, and other accolades soon followed, and before long, the son of long-time Orioles coach Cal Ripken, Sr. was a 20-year-old local-boy who made good and became an international baseball icon.

For 21 consecutive seasons, Cal Ripken, Jr. was an Orioles mainstay, contributing leadership, skill, and athletic prowess to the team and its fans. In the end, his record 2,632 games played was a testament to Ripken's dedication as an athlete and embodied the spirit of the Baltimore Orioles organization. The legacy of his impact on the game of professional baseball extends far beyond his record-breaking streak to provide a new standard of excellence for dedicated baseball players everywhere.

Not only do Ripken's 431 home runs top the all-time Orioles list, but Cal also has the most hits (3,184), most runs (1,647), most RBI (1,695), most extra-base hits (1,078), most doubles (603), most at bats (11,551), and most games played (3,001).

The Club constructed and sold 260 special VIP seats for the record setting game. The seats cost $500 each and the proceeds-all $1,300,000-was used to create the Cal Ripken/Lou Gehrig Fund for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease) at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

On September 5, the night Ripken tied Lou Gehrig's mark, the first pitch was thrown out by Earl Weaver, who managed Cal for 386 games of the streak and moved him from third base to shortstop just 27 games into the streak.

On July 15,1996, Ripken started at third base for the first time since 6/30/82. He had made 2,216 consecutive starts at shortstop, a Major League Baseball record for any position.
